Licensed Denturists serve patients in several states, all of Canada, much of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa, to name a few. This successful profession has been praised by government leaders and has benefitted thousands of their citizens.
The point is that the denturist profession is everywhere and requires regulation. In states where denturists are not allowed to practice legally, lab technicians that may or may not have adequate education may choose to practice without required oversight. This situation benefits no one. It leaves patients without the assurance of best care and leaves the providers without access to training and connections to professional organizations. When denturists are allowed to practice legally they receive formal education and state regulation, both of which benefit the patient and the denturist. As with all regulated healthcare professionals, licensed Denturists are required to follow mandated rules administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), adhere to Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, and comply with all of the law and rule overseen by the state regulatory board that license these professionals.
In fact, the Board of Denturists (when established) will ensure that there are policies, procedures, and protocols in place that regulate every are of the Denturist’s scope of practice. This is the only way to protect the safety of those seeking treatment in Kentucky. Licensed Denturists receive formal education meeting or exceeding comprehensive baseline competencies established by the National Denturist Association (Link). This mirrors exactly how the dental profession and the American Dental Association ensures that dentists all over the United States are trained similarly. To qualify for licensure, Denturists must go through a rigorous learning process and acquire the skills to manufacture high-quality oral prosthetics. They graduate from Certified Denture Education Programs with a minimum of 1,000 hours of training, all focused on removable prosthetics. Hard-earned knowledge is the solid foundation of denturist practice.
Without a legitimate avenue for licensure, there is no assurance of quality or care offered to those individuals in desperate need for dental prosthetics. Regulation of the Denturist profession in Kentucky will establish a formal board that will protect our citizens in this important part our overall dental health care and license those that are truly competent to provide denture services.
